Art Theft

2 of the 4 versions of The Scream, by Edvard Munch, have been stolen, but recovered.

Paheal works hard to protect the rights of artist, and you can help.

I consider “art theft” the any of the following, or a combination of them:

  1. Removing an artist’s name, logo, or signature.
  2. Adding your own name, logo, or signature without having do anything to the image.
  3. Adding a watermark to an image without the artist’s permission (e.g. aerisdies dot com).
  4. Taking credit for an image you did not create.

If you suspect an image has been “stolen”, please email us (staff {at} paheal.net) with your case.  Commenting on the image alone will not bring it to our attention.  Please try to provide some proof and a link to the original image.  The first two points listed, especially doing both of them, is the worst kind of art theft and I will personally go out of my way to report it on other sites.  Any images that violate #3 will be deleted from out site (a list of offending websites can be found in the FAQ).

    Yet, not all people don’t like their art pictures to be on other sites, but I’ve never put watermarks on people’s pictures because I’m not really a jerk. If people don’t want their art to be on this site, they should PM you staffers instead of members. I had this problem with someone before. He requested me to remove his Axl images off of this site, so I PM’d him back to contact you guys so that he’ll be in the DNP list, but it turns out that he didn’t followed my introductions. 😐 Oh well, at least I won’t upload his pictures anymore. His pictures are in the forbidding bucket, where people don’t want his images to be uploaded on here anymore. =P

    @Titanium Well that too, he should just put his name on his pictures instead. However, not all people’s pictures have their own watermarks on their pictures though. People usually forget to use their signatures on their pictures before they upload it. Then people started to take these images and upload them on other sites, such as AerisDies. Good thing that I don’t go to AD anymore, their submissions were taking really long now than they were, plus they used to add watermarks on people’s pictures before, which caused criticism of their art to be stolen. After all that drama going on, AerisDies stopped putting current picture’s watermarks as of today.

    But yeah, like I said, people should put their signatures on their pictures before people steal them.

    So what about things like Drawn-Sex? they steal like mad and replace watermarks.. but they also produce “things” that are so lulz worthy and damaging to the childhood (armor piercing amiright?) that I’m torn between doing the right thing and keeping them for the lulz. Most of those images have the best comments on all of Paheal (in my opinion).

    At this moment there are 6893 Drawn-Sex images on Rule 34 and I can guess that well over half are not Drawn-Sex originals. Should we give a link to the original image (assuming it’s on the site already) along with the Drawn-Sex ripoff in those cases? These folk make money off theft so even if they create hilarious images.. something should be done.

    I’ve recently been banned for having removed an artist’s logo/name on a picture i’ve drawn-over (sorry for my english,i dont found the word) for not someone to think it was an original Artwork,not in order to steal anything.

    You also talking about “adding a watermark”, what does it mean,what is a watermark ?

    Can i post a picture that is not mine that i’ve remade if i let the original artist’s logo ?

    I have to agree with anyone who would do any of those 4 things is a faggot (the bad kind) of the highest order. It’s just wrong to try and pass off artwork as your own, and I for one will not do that in the few instances when I post something that is ‘original’ that I have found.

    Second, what if I were to edit something out of a pic and the artist sig had to be edited out or it would look weird and post it, is that theft?

    ^no. if you aren’t taking credit then it’s not theft. either tag the artist (if they already have a tag on Paheal) or link to the original image in the Source field.

    @Vorin You could maybe erase the artist’s name, then put it back in with a text box when you’re done with coloring or whatever it is you’re doing to the picture.

    What I’d like to see is links to the creator’s site be displayed to all visitors, not just the logged in ones, and the links to be dofollow – nofollow is saying “we do not endorse this site” which is the opposite message of “the image originated from this site”, isn’t it?

    Vorin – You can move the artist’s sig to another part of the pic. If you delete it entirely, I’d say yes, it’s art theft.

    Our definition of “art theft” is when you take someone’s art and try to claim it’s your own. Users who upload images don’t claim to be the artists. We have a “source” field for images to link back to the originals and we try to tag the artists.

    If your definition differs, then it’s a problem of wording.

    If you want your art removed from our site, the procedure is laid out in the FAQ. Basically, you just need to email us.
